FoxDog Stampede: Retired Goats

Retired Does

It's hard to believe, but we've had goats here at FoxDog for going on 14 years. We bought doelings and a buckling for our foundation stock, and those goats grew into great animals. Most have passed on, but we have one left: Mack, the beloved foundation doe. Mack is old, boney, has a hard time walking. Her voice has changed and she sounds like a firetruck when she says hello. Also retired is Genevieve, the strange one. Genevieve is young, one of Mack's daughters. She had kids once and will never do it again (she says). She refuses to get pregnant or carry the kids to term. That's nature. Who are we to disrespect it?

Amalthea and Moonshadow are two does who were born here and have given us four and three groups of kids each. They are retired, as they are reaching the age of 11 and 10, respectively. Both are in very good shape for their age. Amalthea was a wonderful mother and loves to be milked. Moonshadow gave birth one last time in 2016. We wanted a doe from her badly, as her lovely daughter, Tara, was killed by a cougar several years ago. Unfortunately, none of the three kids to which Moonshadow gave birth were born alive. They were all full term, but all died as we tried valiantly to untangle them in the birth canal. Moonshadow mourned. She has adopted Rikke as her 'kid' and she loved to be milked because its her 'kid' doing the milking. Rikke felt honored, frankly.

  • Color: Mack has 'eyebar' or 'angel' agouti patterning with partial white belt, roaning, random spots and a star. Her eumelanic areas are true black. Her eyes are gold.
  • About: Mack was our herd Queen. She is gentle, friendly and somewhat stubborn. She is also quite curious, and loves to be scratched. She turned out to be a great milker with wonderful tasty milk. As a once, and now former, herd Queen, aging has not been kind to her and she limps and is, at 13-14 years old, growing quite frail. She deserves her long and fine retirement with the goaty equivalent of good food and wine. Her daughter and granddaughters carry on her legacy of fine milking, lovely quiet demeanour, and stubborn curiosity.

  • About: Amalthea is named for the doe who nursed the god Zeus when his mother had to hide him from the Titans. She bore the very first cornucopia, or horn of plenty. When her horn was broken it gave all the food and fruits of life. She was immortalized upon her death by Zeus as the constellation Capricorn. So our little Amalthea had a lot to live up to, and she's definitely done so. She's got her mother's loving and curious temperament and is extremely friendly and sociable. She knows her name and will come when called. She absolutely adores hot dog buns. She is a good milker and a great mother, and gave birth to 4 lively kids for her first time freshening, 5 kids (1 dead when born) in her second freshening, 5 kids on her third freshening and 1 strapping boy kid on her fourth freshening. At 11 years old, she has been retired. She is still strong and feisty and would probably go ahead and get pregnant if she could figure out a way into the boys' area!

  • About: Moonshadow is a beautiful doe who has produced some nice kids and milk. She is sometimes bossy and sometimes friendly. She is retired as of 2016. She is currently big and strong and doing well, but her last freshening ended poorly with the babies dying. She mourned and grieved, Rikke has become her new baby in a way.

  • Color: Agouti, black and light tan, white topknot, extensive white roaning on rear quarters, golden eyes. She looks a lot like her mother.
  • About: Genevieve is lively, curious and might have taken her mother's place as herd queen alongside her sister Florence, if she liked to be a mother. She was a single birth and became spoiled as a consequence. She is retired because she has only had kids (two bucks) once. Since then she either avoids the bucks, or gets pregnant and reabsorbs. We do not know why, she's quite healthy and she's happy as she is, and that's fine by us.
